World Arthritis Day Campaign 2024 - Arthritis Action

World Arthritis Day Campaign 2024

Our flagship awareness raising campaign in the lead up to World Arthritis Day, Saturday 12th October, aims to highlight the real impact of osteoarthritis on society, and individuals. As the age of diagnosis reduces owing to lifestyle factors, we take a closer look at the major impact it can have on people’s lives, and ways to mediate it through supported self-management.

During this week, you can listen to our World Arthritis Day podcast, find our new YouGov report looking particularly at osteoarthritis in people aged 25-65, as well as new stories from people with lived experience of osteoarthritis.

Elizabeth’s Story

My arthritis has affected my life outside work too. I started turning down invitations to go out for drinks as I couldn’t stand for long periods and my social life started to shrink. Not seeing friends and being that lively person I was before really played on my mental health too.

Graham’s Story

Over the years it became more difficult to fit exercise alongside high-pressure senior teacher/deputy head roles and by that time being a parent too. Things began to accumulate, and I went into a downward spiral, I ended up cancelling my gym membership, was highly stressed, hyperventilating and having panic attacks.

I knew that I needed to get back to my exercise and my sport, but I found I experienced injuries every time I went back to training. In retrospect I was probably going in too hard, too fast with too high expectations.
